Buying a Father's Day card is one of those jobs that always seems to arrive about four days before you're ready for it. You end up standing in a supermarket aisle at 8pm on a Saturday, staring at a wall of golf jokes and fishing puns, wondering which one will make your dad do the little nose-exhale that passes for a laugh. If you're shopping online instead, you've got more time, but a new problem: you can't feel the card before you buy it.
That's the gap I wanted to look at with the Absolutely Yours Fathers Day Card for Dad. It's a 150x150mm square card with a stars design, made in the UK, and it costs £3.99. There's no Amazon rating to lean on yet, so this review comes from the spec sheet and what the listing tells us about materials, size and packaging.
My bottom line, early: the spec is better than you'd expect at this price, especially the card thickness and the packaging. It won't suit anyone who wants a jokey or deeply personal message printed inside, because the greeting is a plain 'Have a Great day!'. But if you want a decent, well-made card that looks smart and won't fold in half on the way to your dad's front door, it's worth a proper look.
The one spec that tells you the most about a greetings card is the thickness of the board, and this one comes in at 365 microns. That's sturdy. Thin cards are the ones that flop over on a mantelpiece, curl at the corners, and make the whole thing feel like an afterthought. At 365 microns this should stand up on its own, and it should survive a trip through the post without arriving looking like it's been sat on.
The listing calls it a 'luxury feel', which is the sort of phrase I'd normally take with a pinch of salt. But the number backs it up. For £3.99 I'd expect a card in this bracket to be fine, not great, so a heavyweight board is a pleasant surprise.
The card is 150x150mm when folded, and with the envelope the whole package is listed at 155x155x3mm and 22g. Those figures are useful because they put it firmly in standard UK letter territory. A large letter would cost you more in postage, but a card this size and weight shouldn't tip you into that bracket, so you won't be doing awkward sums at the post office counter.

I like the square format. It looks a bit more considered than the usual portrait card, and it sits nicely on a shelf. The downside is that square cards don't always fit standard photo-frame-style card stands, though that's a minor niggle for something you'll probably prop against a kettle for a week.
Plenty of cards at this price come with a flimsy white envelope that seems designed to fail. This one is supplied with a premium Kraft envelope, which gives it a slightly earthy, handmade look. It also means the package feels a touch more thoughtful when it lands on the doormat. If your dad is the sort who notices these things, and plenty of dads do, it's a nice detail.
Plenty of products slap 'eco-friendly' in the title and leave it at that. This one gives you something to check. The card is designed, printed and packed in the UK, and the board itself is manufactured in Europe. The card arrives individually wrapped in a clear compostable, biodegradable bag made with a minimum of 80% renewable bio-based content.
That's a specific claim, and it's a good one. Cellophane sleeves are one of the daftest bits of waste in the card world, so seeing a compostable alternative is welcome. I'd add the usual caveat that compostable bags generally need the right disposal route to do their job, so don't assume it will vanish if you chuck it in the general bin. Still, it's a step in the right direction, and a cheap one for the buyer.
Here's where I'd pump the brakes a little. The inside carries a pre-printed 'Have a Great day!' message. That's friendly and harmless, but it's also generic, and it isn't specific to Father's Day at all. If you were hoping for a heartfelt verse or a good gag, you won't find one.
Does that matter? It depends on you. A blank-ish inside gives you room to write your own message, which is arguably the best bit of any card. But if you're someone who struggles to fill a blank space with words, the pre-printed line may feel a little thin. I'd rather have more room to write than a forced rhyme, but I know plenty of people feel the opposite.
For a thick, UK-made card with a Kraft envelope and compostable packaging, £3.99 sits in the sensible middle. It's more than a multipack-style bargain card, but you're paying for noticeably better materials and a bit of care in the presentation. Compared with the pricier boutique-style cards that can run well past that figure, it undercuts them while delivering a similar sturdy, premium feel.
With no Amazon rating available yet, I can't point to a wall of buyer reviews to confirm how it holds up in the wild, and I'd rather say so plainly than invent a verdict. What I can say is that the spec sheet reads well on every point that affects the physical card: the thickness, the size, the weight, the envelope and the packaging. If the listing is accurate, this is a solid, no-fuss buy.
A well-specified, UK-made card with a thick board and tidy eco packaging that's fair value at £3.99. Buy it if you want a smart, sturdy card you can write your own message in. Skip it if you're after a funny or sentimental verse already printed inside.
