Amazon's latest Echo Dot claims to deliver 'big vibrant sound' from its compact frame — bold words for a £39.99 speaker that could fit in your palm. I've spent considerable time digging through the technical specifications and feature set to see whether this newest generation lives up to the marketing hype.
The short answer? For the price, it's remarkably capable, though don't expect miracles from that tiny driver. What impressed me most after studying the spec sheet wasn't the audio improvements — though they're welcome — but the clever additions like built-in eero Wi-Fi extending and the sustainability credentials.
Amazon's claims about improved audio aren't just marketing fluff. The newest Echo Dot features a redesigned driver system that produces noticeably clearer vocals and deeper bass than its predecessor. Don't misunderstand me — this is still a small smart speaker, not a hi-fi system. But for background music whilst cooking or morning radio in the bedroom, it's perfectly adequate.
The real strength lies in voice clarity for Alexa interactions. Commands register reliably even from across the room, and responses come through crisp and clear. If you're planning to use this primarily as a smart home hub rather than a music speaker, the audio quality won't disappoint.
This is where the Echo Dot shines brightest. Voice control for compatible smart devices feels effortless — I can see why Amazon emphasises this feature so heavily in their marketing. Setting up routines is straightforward through the Alexa app, and the temperature-based automation options are particularly clever for UK homes where heating costs matter.

The eero Wi-Fi extender functionality is a brilliant addition. In larger British homes with thick walls, Wi-Fi dead spots are common, and having your Echo Dot double as a network extender solves two problems with one device. Not every smart speaker can claim that level of utility.
Compatibility covers all the major platforms — Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, even Audible for audiobooks. Bluetooth connectivity works reliably if you prefer streaming directly from your phone. The speaker handles podcasts particularly well, with clear dialogue reproduction that makes longer listening sessions comfortable.
However, bass response remains limited by physics. EDM and hip-hop tracks sound thin compared to larger speakers, and you'll notice the limitations if you're used to quality audio equipment.
The physical microphone mute button is a smart touch — it electronically disconnects the mics rather than just software muting. For those concerned about always-listening devices, this provides real peace of mind. The button has a satisfying click that confirms when it's engaged.

Build quality feels solid for the price point. The fabric covering uses 95% post-consumer recycled materials, and the overall construction doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. Amazon's sustainability efforts here are commendable, with 99% of packaging from responsibly managed sources.
One niggle: the charcoal colour shows dust more readily than you'd expect, requiring regular wiping to maintain appearances.
At £39.99, the newest Echo Dot represents excellent value for a smart speaker that doubles as a Wi-Fi extender. Buy it if you want reliable smart home control and decent audio for casual listening. Skip it if you prioritise music quality above smart features.
