Budget Chromebooks used to mean putting up with sluggish performance and creaky build quality. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook suggests those days might be behind us — at least if you set your expectations right. For £149, you're getting a proper laptop with a 14-inch full HD screen, all-day battery life, and a surprisingly solid build.
I've spent time researching this machine through spec sheets and customer feedback, and it's clear Lenovo has made some smart choices. The MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor isn't going to set the world alight, but paired with Chrome OS, it handles everyday tasks without the grinding slowness that plagued earlier budget Chromebooks. The question is whether those compromises — and there are some — make sense at this price point.
The MediaTek Kompanio 520 is an interesting choice for a budget Chromebook. It's not the usual Intel Celeron you'd expect at this price, and that's largely a good thing. Chrome OS is optimised for ARM processors like this one, which means better battery efficiency and surprisingly decent performance for web browsing, document editing, and video streaming.
From what I can gather from the technical specs and real-world usage patterns, this processor handles Google Workspace tasks comfortably. You can run multiple Chrome tabs without the system grinding to a halt — something that wasn't always guaranteed with previous-generation budget Chromebooks. Video calls work fine, though I wouldn't push it with too many other applications running simultaneously.
The 4GB of RAM feels tight by today's standards, but it's adequate for Chrome OS. The operating system is designed to work efficiently with limited memory, and the 64GB eMMC storage provides enough space for offline files and Android apps from the Play Store.

Lenovo claims 13.5 hours of battery life, which would be impressive if accurate. ARM processors like the Kompanio 520 are generally more power-efficient than their Intel counterparts, so this figure isn't completely unrealistic. In practice, you're probably looking at closer to 10-11 hours of mixed use — still excellent for a budget machine.
The combination of the efficient processor and Chrome OS's lightweight nature means this Chromebook can genuinely last a full working day. That's a significant advantage over Windows laptops in this price range, which typically struggle to reach six hours of real-world use.
At 18.6mm thick and around 1.3kg, the IdeaPad Slim 3 feels remarkably solid for £149. Lenovo mentions no moving parts, which suggests they've gone with eMMC storage and passive cooling — both sensible choices for reliability and noise levels.
The 14-inch FHD display uses TN panel technology, which is the budget option but still delivers sharp text and decent colours for web browsing and document work. The 250 nits brightness specification suggests it won't be brilliant in direct sunlight, but it's fine for indoor use. The front-facing speakers are tuned by Waves Audio, which sounds fancy but likely means basic processing to prevent distortion at higher volumes.

I appreciate the privacy features Lenovo has included: a physical camera shutter, dedicated mute key, and Google's H1 security chip. These touches show attention to modern concerns about privacy and security.
The port selection is sensible rather than generous. You get one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, one USB-C port that handles data, charging, and external displays, plus a microSD card reader and headphone jack. The USB-C port supporting DisplayPort means you can connect an external monitor, though the MediaTek processor won't drive anything too demanding.
WiFi 6 support is a nice touch at this price point, ensuring the Chromebook won't become a bottleneck on faster home networks. Bluetooth connectivity handles wireless peripherals without fuss.
The biggest limitation is that single USB-A port — you'll need a hub if you want to connect multiple accessories simultaneously whilst keeping the machine charged.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook delivers where it matters most — reliable performance and excellent battery life at a price that won't break the bank. It's ideal for students, light business users, or anyone who primarily works in web browsers and Google's ecosystem.
