Right, let's be honest about drawer organisers. Most of us have tried one at some point, only to watch it slide about like a drunk penguin every time we open the drawer. So when we spotted the Lifewit Extendable Cutlery Drawer Organiser promising to solve our kitchen chaos for just £11.36, we were equal parts hopeful and sceptical. After three weeks of proper use — and deliberately trying to break it with our usual kitchen carnage — we've got some thoughts. The short version? It's surprisingly decent for the money, though it's not going to revolutionise your life. This adjustable nine-compartment tray stretches from 30cm to 50cm wide, which means it should fit most standard kitchen drawers without the usual faff of measuring twice and buying wrong.
Out of the box, the Lifewit organiser feels more substantial than we expected. The black plastic isn't the cheap, flimsy stuff that cracks when you look at it sideways. We're talking proper thick material that doesn't flex when you press it. The extending mechanism slides smoothly — none of that grinding, reluctant movement you get with rubbish versions.
Setting it up took about thirty seconds. You literally just pull the sides apart until it fits snugly in your drawer. Our test drawer measured 42cm, and the organiser locked into place perfectly. No screws, no assembly instructions written in broken English, no existential crisis about why nothing ever fits properly.
Here's where things get interesting. The nine compartments aren't all the same size, which is actually brilliant. The longer sections are perfect for knives and serving spoons, whilst the smaller ones handle teaspoons and those weird little corn holders you use twice a year but can never find.
We loaded it up with our usual drawer chaos — everything from proper kitchen knives to that bottle opener shaped like a flamingo that seemed hilarious after three pints. Everything found a home, and more importantly, everything stayed put. No more playing cutlery jenga every time someone opens the drawer too enthusiastically.
The compartments are deep enough that nothing slides over the dividers, which was our biggest worry. Even when our editor's teenage son yanked the drawer open like he was starting a lawnmower, the cutlery stayed organised.
This was the real test. Most drawer organisers have commitment issues — they promise to stay put but end up shuffling about like they're doing the conga. The Lifewit version grips the drawer sides firmly once extended. We deliberately gave it the full kitchen chaos treatment: rapid drawer opening, overstuffing compartments, and the ultimate test — letting a seven-year-old loose on it whilst looking for a dessert spoon.
It held firm. The extending mechanism creates enough friction against the drawer sides to keep everything stable, but not so much that you can't adjust it if needed.
The compartment sizes are fixed, which means you're stuck with Lifewit's idea of what your cutlery collection looks like. If you've got an unusual drawer shape or own a lot of oversized utensils, you might find some compartments too small and others wasted space. It's not adjustable within itself — just the overall width.
This organiser works brilliantly for anyone with a standard UK kitchen drawer who's tired of cutlery chaos but doesn't want to spend thirty quid on a fancy wooden version. It's perfect for renters who can't make permanent changes, or anyone who moves house regularly and needs something adaptable. We'd also recommend it for anyone organising a utility drawer — it's not just for cutlery, despite the name.
For £11.36, the Lifewit Extendable Cutlery Drawer Organiser does exactly what it promises without any drama. It's not glamorous, but it works properly and should last for years. If you need reliable drawer organisation without breaking the bank, this is a solid choice.
